About this Course:
The Literacy Lab School is designed to give the classroom teacher familiarity with research-based instructional materials, techniques and strategies in the area of reading. Participants will learn instructional routines and strategies in the five major components of reading instruction:
- phonological awareness;
- phonics;
- spelling;
- fluency;
- vocabulary and comprehension.
Participants will become familiar with benchmark and progress monitoring assessments and learn how to use these assessments to develop differentiated instruction in the classroom. Participants will collaborate with peers to design and deliver direct reading instruction to selected lab school student during the summer week. There will also be a fall practicum component.

About the Instructor:
Janet Larson received a BA from the Univeristy of Illinois and a M.Ed. from St. Michael’s College. Janet has taught 1st/2nd grade and has held the following positions at Stowe Elementary School: Remedial Reading, Chapter 1, Consulting Teacher, Reading Recovery, and Early Literacy Facilitator. She has presented for the Stern Center, taught courses for LAPDA and has served as an adjunct instructor at Johnson State College and St. Michael’s College, teaching courses in literacy instruction.
