Who should take this course?
Any teacher, Student Assistance Counselor, Guidance Counselor, Prevention Specialist or Mental Health Professional wishing to expand his or her repertoire of powerful, pro-active community building skills for students. Note: Those successfully completing this course will be able to access the Hazen Challenge course for a minimal use fee only, saving facilitator fee expenses for their school.
Those implementing the Positive Behavior Support program, or wishing to expand their Responsive Classroom team building options will particularly benefit from this training opportunity.
Overview:
We will explore the power of the low ropes challenge course as a medium for positive norm setting and community building with students in this interactive, two credit graduate course. Participants will learn the technical and facilitation skills necessary for designing and implementing a low ropes challenge course program for their students, achieving both the confidence and competence to utilize the Hazen Union course as one of their highly effective instructional tools. Participants will also learn how to continue to nurture this positive classroom community throughout the year, promoting problem solving and communication skill development, self-esteem, and a sense of responsibility for self and others through proven, experientially-based strategies.About the Instructor
Jennifer Stanchfield, MS:
In her 20 years as an educator, Jen has worked as a classroom teacher, as a clinician in treatment centers for children and adolescents, and in the challenge course training field. Jen is known for her work helping schools and community programs throughout the country use experiential methods to develop a positive learning community, increase student engagement and develop positive assets and social- emotional skills. She has a master’s degree in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Jen is author of A Teachable Moment and Tips & Tools for the Art of Experiential Group Facilitation. She is a board member of the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT).
High 5 Adventure Learning Center, the course sponsor, is a non-profit educational organization located in Brattleboro, VT focused on challenge course construction, training and program implementation. High 5 is dedicated to helping individuals, schools and communities use experiential education as an effective tool for improving the way they live, learn and work together.
