About the Instructors

Kay Marcelle is currently the Technology Integration Specialist at the Waitsfi eld School (www.waitsfi eldelementary.org). She received her M.Ed.with a concentration on Educational Technology in 1995, has done consultant work for school districts, the Department of Education and AOL, teaches graduate level courses, and presents at workshops and conferences on a variety of topics related to educational technology including media literacy.

Nationally renowned speaker and media educator Bob McCannon, former executive director of the New Mexico Media Literacy Project (www.nmmlp.org), is the co-founder and co-president of the Action Coalition for Media Education (www. acmecoalition.org). He brings thirty years of classroom teaching and media education experience to our summer institute, and has trained more than one thousand teachers in his pioneering media education workshops. Rob Williams, Ph.D. (www.robwilliamsmedia.com) is a Vermont-based musician, historian, consultant, and media educator/ maker who teaches F2F and online history and media studies courses at Champlain College and Sacred Heart University, runs a media education/video production organization called MemeFILMS (www.memefi lms.org), and is co-founder and copresident of the Action Coalition for Media Education (ACME at www.acmecoalition.org). A former middle and high school teacher, he has taught and written about media literacy education for ten years. Rob holds a B.A. in History from Princeton University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of New Mexico.

Course Description

We live in the midst of the most powerful media culture the world has ever known. For our K-12 students, our 21st media system holds out both tremendous promise and tremendous peril. How can we as teachers learn and integrate multi-media literacy education into our classrooms in ways that benefi t our students? How might we harness “new media” technologies – podcasting, digital video technology, and blogging – to enhance our classroom instruction and adapt the best of our 21st media culture to benefit our pedagogical goals? We’ll explore the answers to these questions in our five-day Action In Media Education (AIME) Institute. Our AIME approach is fun, interactive, skills-based, and small-group focused. By the end of our AIME Institute, participants will have learned and be able to apply the following knowledge and skills in their classrooms:

• The general principles of media literacy education, as well as how to incorporate them into any K-12 classroom.
  
• Specific persuasive techniques, including “the language of the image.”
  
• Media Education skills to inspire civic engagement.
  
• “New Media” basics – digital video, podcasting, and blogging technologies.
