Course Description
The Leadership role in improving student writing: Implications for instruction and assessment.
Research has demonstrated that significant qualitative differences exist between the simple task of assigning writing and the effective teaching of writing. This four part series will provide administrators and teacher leaders with the guidance they need to develop a direct instructional process in writing that includes:
• Elements of effective writing instruction
• Program practices to increase students writing for a variety of purposes across the curriculum
• Techniques to build writing fluency and student confidence;
• Lessons for using literature models and analyzing author’s craft.
Over the course of this series, school and district based teams will self-assess their school writing program, identify strengths and areas for growth, draft writing action steps for strategic planning, and determine resources or professional development needed for systemic growth.
In sessions 1-2
Teams will gain an understanding of:
• Key differences between assigning writing and teaching writing
• Learn to identify the elements of effective writing instruction
• Review effective program practices to increase students writing routinely for a variety of purposes across the curriculum
• Learn how to balance systemic work in writing with other initiatives
• Develop prompts to build writing fluency and student confidence
• Critique lessons for using literature models and analyzing author’s craft
• Review strategies for writing across the curriculum
In session #3
Teams will:
• Problem solve challenges people have discovered while trying out their new learning from the first three sessions
• Discuss what kind of feedback teachers find most useful in improving writing instruction considering their new learning
• Conduct a self-assessment of their school or supervisory writing program, identifying strengths and areas for growth as well as any further information needed in order to self-assess
• Draft writing action steps for their 2011-2012 Strategic Plan/Action Plan and determine what teachers need for those next steps
