Communication Skills for Educators

NOTE: Cost does not include 3 graduate credits from Castleton State College. Credits are available, either graduate or undergraduate for an additional $327

Course Description:

This course is designed to help educators (teachers, specialists, administrators and paraprofessionals) develop interpersonal skills that can be used with students, colleagues and parents. It is built upon the belief that when the adults in the school community can work collaboratively, students benefit.

Specific skills include: roadblocks to effective communication, uncovering issues beneath the surface, establishing personal boundaries, respectful assertiveness, responding confidently to personal attack, problem solving and conflict resolution.

The skills have helped numerous educators in establishing positive classroom environments, working effectively with colleagues, and establishing healthy relationships with parents. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on acquiring concrete practical skills.

About the Instructor:

Doug Klette has worked with teachers, parents and administrators for almost forty years. During this time he taught middle school and served as the Director of Guidance for St. Albans City School. He is an approved adjunct instructor at UVM, Castleton and Lyndon State Colleges.

Last time this course was offered (2005-06) it received an average course rating of 4.82 out of 5.0.
